形态描述：高达2.5米的灌木。分枝多，下部枝条披垂，小枝绿色，老枝灰褐色，节间稍扁平，刺多，劲直，长达4厘米，顶端红褐色，很少近于无刺。叶硬革质，有柑橘叶香气，叶面暗绿，叶背线绿色，卵形，倒卵形，椭圆形或近圆形，长2-6、很少达10厘米，宽1-5厘米，顶端圆或钝，微或明显凹入，中脉在叶面稍凸起，侧脉多，彼此近于平行，叶缘有弧形边脉，油点多；叶柄长1-7毫米，粗壮。花多朵簇生，稀单朵腋生，几无花梗；萼片及花瓣均5片；花瓣白色，长3-4毫米有油点；雄蕊10枚，花丝白色，分离，有时有少数在基部合生；花柱约与子房等长，绿色。果圆球形，略扁圆形或近椭圆形，径8-12毫米，果皮平滑，有稍凸起油点，透熟时蓝黑色，果萼宿存于果梗上，有少数无柄的汁胞，汁胞扁圆、多棱、半透明、紧贴室壁，合粘胶质液，有种子2或1粒；种皮薄膜质，子叶厚，肉质，绿色，多油点，通常单胚，偶有2胚，胚根甚短，无毛。花期5-12月，果期9-12月，常在同一植株上花、果并茂。
