形态描述：多年生。秆坚硬，直立或基部节上生根而倾斜，高50-100厘米，基部数节可分枝，无毛。叶鞘除边缘具柔毛外余无毛，短于节间，或上部者稍长于节间，叶舌纤毛状，长约2毫米；叶片质较坚硬，披针形，长7-15厘米，宽8-18毫米，上面具短硬毛而粗糙，下面无毛，边缘加厚而为软骨质。圆锥花序椭圆形或倒卵状椭圆形，开展，长15-25厘米，宽6-12厘米，分枝单生，每一分枝可再1-2次分出小枝，每小枝具1-2枚小穗；分枝及小穗柄无腺斑；小穗长1-1.5毫米，椭圆状球形，灰白色；颖草质，约与小穗等长，具5-7脉，背部上半部疏生小硬毛或无毛；两小花同质同形，内外稃均被微小的细毛，偶有第二小花稍小，为椭圆形或卵圆形，第一小花两性，第二小花常为雌性。颖果椭圆形。染色体数2n=60。花果期夏秋季。
